02-02. A Bargain with Devils: Part 2

Elliot's meeting with Bonnie didn't go so well in the beginning. At first she tried to charm him by batting her eyes and shoving flowers his way.

Elliot: Bonnie, never mind the simpering! I'm not falling for those tricks! I've come here to talk, and I'm going to have my say.

Despite Elliot's attempts to reach Bonnie, she didn't trust him. Called him a do-gooder.
Bonnie: Me and Clyde are doing just fine! Stay out of our lives!
Screenshot-33.jpg
Elliot: You're fooling yourself, Bonnie. These people you're hanging with? They'd knife you in the back just for those little pearls on your ears! I'm telling you, the only future you two have is to bail right now! Today!

Clyde was getting plenty upset. He hadn't told Bonnie about his talks with Elliot. He never knew how she'd react to things he did. He loved her craziness; her mood swings excited him. But man! Sometimes...she was just so hard to reason with.

Elliot: Clyde, you need to take a stand here! You can't have it both ways. Either you're in or you're out! I can only work with snitches just so long. I don't like rats! And I don't think you want to be one either. You told me you wanted out. Now explain that to Bonnie!

As Clyde steamed over the hard line Elliot was taking, Elliot made another appeal to Bonnie.
Elliot: You two have a lot going for you. You're both quick, Bright Young Things. You can go far if you could control these dangerous wild streaks!
Screenshot-40.jpg
Elliot: I'm trying to play straight with you here. I don't think either one of you are the evil villains you act like. But I'm telling you...if you keep going the way you are? You'll both end up dead in some ditch, riddled with bullet holes!
Bonnie watched Clyde break out in a sweat. She was shocked that Elliot had gotten to him.

Bonnie: What's the matter with you, Clyde Baby. You ain't gonna let this killjoy tell you what to do, are you?
Clyde: Bonnie, here's the truth. It's not Nest giving the orders. It's Mr Dandy. He had some real words with me today. Scary stuff, Bon-Bon. I'm worried. I'm afraid for me AND for you. No joke, babe! I'm being set up as a patsy.

Bonnie started getting nervous. It was all so confusing.
Bonnie: Clyde?
Clyde: It's ok, Bonnie. We've got things figured out. Trust me, ok?

Clyde told Bonnie to pack up a few things, be set to take a little trip. He and Elliot would be gone for awhile, but he'd return soon to get her.

Elliot added the assurance that an officer was nearby, watching the house.
Elliot (to Bonnie): You're safe for now.
Elliot (turning to Clyde): Come on. We'll talk in the car.

Elliot got straight to the point.
Elliot: These words with Dandy? What's suppose to happen tonight?

Clyde looked out the window, spoke low.
Clyde: That raid last night. Dandy's suspicious of me. Said you'd be back once you got those papers about the weapon design. Told me to talk to you, to play stoolie, but to make sure you never got inside the warehouse.

Clyde rubbed a shaky hand across his eyes.
Clyde: I'm suppose to knock you out, start a fire, and...leave you stuck there. Everyone else is up at Dandy's, giving each other alibis.
Elliot shot a quick glance over at Clyde.
Elliot: But not you or Bonnie, huh?

Clyde: Yah, that's what's got me scared. Dandy said to bring Bonnie over to the house after, uh, after I was sure you'd been taken care of.
Elliot: Clyde, Bonnie's all right. Keep your mind focused on what we need to do.
Elliot pulled the car over to a side road. They'd be walking from there.

Creeping along in the dark, Elliot asked Clyde a few more questions.
Elliot: You're sure the prototype mentioned in the weapon design is in the warehouse?
Clyde: Yes. They don't think I know where it's at. But I'm good at sneaking around, figuring things out. Bonnie's good with a computer too. She told me some stuff she discovered. That weapon is almost finished. They're keeping it down below in the lower level, close to the dock lift.

Once they got to the warehouse, Elliot whispered some last minute instructions to Clyde, then looked him straight in the eye.
Elliot: I'm going to trust you, Reeves.
Clyde nodded.

Clyde walked to the back of the building where he'd set up the incendiaries earlier. Despite everything, he was getting excited.

Clyde got the fire going. He'd wanted a big show, so he'd arranged several devices. He looked them over as Elliot ran past and disappeared down the bank to the water. His plan was to enter the lift below the dock and break into the building from there. He'd be hidden from anyone who might be watching once the flames got grew brighter.

Clyde couldn't help himself. He grinned at the crackling flames. He got as close as he could. Front row seat, man! Oh, yah!

Meanwhile, Elliot swam quickly under the dock ramp, looking for the secret entry for the lift. He cursed to himself when he saw Clyde whooping out loud at the fire.
Elliot: Crazy kid! He's going to get himself killed! Dammit!

The sooner Elliot got into the building, the sooner he could get back to Clyde.

But Clyde was in control now, at least HE thought so. He slowly started dousing the flames as he'd been told. Well, maybe he HAD used a little too much fuel. Maybe. But wow! Extreme!

Soon, Elliot was beside Clyde, keeping to the shadows as best as he could, while still helping to put out the last of the flames.

Then they rushed off to the wooded area near the dock. Clyde was still grinning. but Elliot started growling at him.
Elliot: Can't you do anything without risking death?
Clyde laughed. He was on a high.
Elliot calmed down. Told Clyde he'd gotten the weapon prototype and had already handed it over to another officer. Dandy and his thugs were in for a surprise tonight.

Elliot shook hands with Clyde.
Elliot: Good luck, son. When you get home, an agent will be waiting for you. They've got a new place for you to live. New last names. New identities. Remember what I told you. This is that real chance you wanted. Don't muck it up!

Elliot watched Clyde walk away. He really wished the best for the kid. But if he didn't go straight, well, there was nothing more Elliot could do for him.

Clyde and Bonnie spent a couple of days riding in trains and cars with grim faced g-men, full of facts and orders, but not a smile among them. Finally, the feds' clunker of a car pulled up to a country home outside a small town.

The house was big all right, just as promised. But the needed repairs hinted at were more than they had imagined. Once, this must have been a grand estate. But now? The place was a decaying hovel.
